Staying in touch

walking home from somewhere the other evening, I watched a young woman practicing the slack line in the park. The step up on to the rope, the walk across and, often, the loss of balance when the body over or under-compensated. Sometimes, the step back into story feels something like that. In the flurry of thoughts, sensations, emotions, where’s the stepping back on to the rope moment?

Here, in a way. Here, on this blog or in the scribbles on the “real” desk. These characters whose lives I started inventing a few years ago, what did they become later when they were in different circumstances?

If the agency approves me as a tenant, the biggest adjustment to my living conditions? Space. As in a vast reduction in the wall kind and in the storage kind too. I guess I’ll do rotating exhibitions of art work and learn to cull and cull some more – prior to running out of space on the bookshelves, once again.

If the agency doesn’t approve me as a tenant? Eh. Not much time to think about that right now. Rehearsal this morning, concert tonight with only fourteen of the original twenty-six members of the singing group on hand. At least, we have a clear sky – always nice when singing outside.

Back to story: notes. Plus reading, re-reading, re-re-reading what’s already written. Re-reading for the spot where the writer steps back on to the slack line – and if ever a slack line there was, a draft is It.
