Concours de circonstances

a lot of people live through punishing events through no fault of their own, other than those defined by the title of this post. Of course, someone, somewhere always comes up with punishing explanations to tack onto to the punishing events in themselves. Karmic debts, poor judgment (such as being born in the ‘wrong’ family because of said karmic debts), or the person’s personality flaws that make punishing circumstances as unavoidable as someone else’s endless streaks of incredible luck.

Bottom line: most people don’t “deserve”  any given combination of good, bad or indifferent circumstances. Unless, of course, someone deliberately sets off to challenge the social and moral codes of a given community.  At which point the members of said community say: You see what happens when you refuse to listen? If you’d behaved the way we do, you would… well, you would have company and you could scapegoat some other community as the source of your problems.

Endings are that much more difficult when nothing in the foreseeable future holds much promise other than the guarantee times as tough (or more) await, just around the bend. What keeps a body going, then? I don’t know. A refusal to accept ready-made solutions, maybe. Or accepting help, even if it goes against the grain.

I don’t know. One step. Another step. One word, no, this other word holds more promise, and so on.
