Don’t wait to get there before you write

The mundane. Things people write on postcards, or say over breakfast. Terrible storm, last night. Don’t forget to take out the trash. Had a wonderful time in Venice. What time does their train come in? Must pack up. Must finish; must, oh by the way.

The homeowners are due back later this morning. I must pack up my things. Put away the books, the notes, the laptop (the laptop, last of all). Chat chat, exchange news, settle back in on the other side of town.  I hate to go. This room and the quiet here were just the things I needed. Perhaps the homeowner will let me borrow her Norton Anthology of American Literature?  It has proved invaluable in helping me define the tone and manner of one of the characters.

Garden furniture strewn about. No need to water the vegetable garden, that’s for sure. Wash the dishes. Strip the bedsheets. Going home.
