The ghost in the machine

In Local projects, Revision, The Crab Walker on June 10, 2014 at 5:41 am

This work day will start in less than two hours with a sit-down with mothers in one of the local schools. Topic: summer holidays, and how to keep a child from losing whatever learning skills he or she has acquired. The rest of the day: four unrelated activities, all of them time-consuming. For now the air is fresh, the sun barely clearing the trees. Mourning doves coo, while no-name birds twitter and the garbage truck plays stop and go on the steep hill above the place where I live.

Yes, I would rather spend several hours revising the Crab Walker. Short of a miracle, that won’t happen today. The demon chaser has limited reach when it comes to organic tiredness – unless he/she/it considers downtime the treatment of choice for tired cells.

Picked up Richard Price’s Lush Life last night before the demon chaser handed me over to Morpheus. Had to laugh at Ike’s handling of the traffic jam caused by the Virgin’s apparition in the cooler. Loved the cop’s take on the true miracle he witnessed.

Sigh. Morning routine, the dog reminds me. Then: mommies at a local school, meeting, coaching, meeting, coaching, home.

Who was the philosopher who called awareness the ghost in the machine? Descartes?

Time to shut the windows. Air’s heating up already. It’s going to be a hot one.
